Workshop Plant and Equipment Register
v2.0
Purpose. This register lists every item of plant that requires inspection, testing or licensing, records inspection dates and results, and identifies who is responsible for each item.
1.Purpose
Plant that fails causes the most serious injuries in workshops. This register makes sure that every hoist, compressor, tyre changer, wheel balancer, welder, refrigerant unit, battery charger and portable electrical tool is identified, inspected on schedule and withdrawn when unsafe.
2.What is recorded
For each item the register records an asset number, description, location, manufacturer, the inspection type and frequency, the last inspection date and result, the next due date, and the responsible person. The live record is kept in the plant register spreadsheet in the safety folder and this document sets the rules for maintaining it.
3.Inspection frequencies
Frequencies follow the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant Australian Standards. Hoists are inspected quarterly and serviced annually. Portable electrical equipment is tested and tagged every six months in the workshop and every twelve months in offices. Compressors and air receivers are inspected annually. Insulated gloves for high-voltage work are tested every six months.
- Vehicle hoists: quarterly inspection, annual service
- Portable electrical tools: test and tag every 6 months
- Air compressors and receivers: annual inspection
- Refrigerant recovery units: annual calibration
- High-voltage insulated gloves: 6 monthly test
- Fire extinguishers: 6 monthly service
4.Overdue and failed items
Any item that is overdue for inspection or fails an inspection must be tagged out of service immediately and its status changed in the register. The item must not be returned to service until a competent person records a pass.
5.New and disposed plant
New plant must be added to the register before first use, with the operating instructions and any required licence filed. Disposed plant is marked as retired and the record kept for seven years.
6.Review
The WHS and Quality Coordinator reviews the register monthly and reports overdue items to the Service Manager and the Dealer Principal.
